Gastro-intestinal bypass surgery. The Atkins Diet. The Zone Diet. The South Beach Diet. The Cabbage Soup Diet. The Jenni Craig Diet. Liposuction.Obesity is as American as apple pie. (Alamode, of course!)
It's been said that 2/3rds of Americans are overweight. The truth of the matter, of course, is that we're not overweight. One cannot be overweight…you weigh what you weigh, whether it's over or under someone else's ideals.
But if we're not overweight then, what are we?
We are, quite simply, fat. F-A-T, fat.
America is full of fat people. Really fat people at that. We're the Land of the Free (free to shove anything down our gullets) and Home of the Brave (brave enough to keep doing it). There's a serious downslide taking place in contemporary America---a nation inundated by data and worthless video images, with high-decibel sales pitches and disingenuous political ads. Our economy is also heading south, so they say. But none of our nationwide troubles can compare to our individual health, or lack thereof. We are a land full of people with little regard for their personal well-being, each belly-flopping in their own ocean of obesity, seemingly stuck with low levels of self-esteem and self-respect. And how can we earn one another's respect if we don't even respect our own selves---our bodies---the only thing we'll possess from birth to death?
Each time I travel within the confines of our barricaded borders I'm literally taken aback at the state of this nation. Every which way I turn I'm confronted by humongous inhabitants, many of whom have more chins than a Chinese phone book! We're not overweight! We're overfat! Though you'd think I'd be used to it by now I still gaze in utter disbelief as these oversized individuals waddle from their oversized cars to their oversized Mondo-Marts, filling their oversized carts with oversized containers of crap. And crap it is! I truly believe if these fat folks ate as they were designed to they'd never get this fat. IF THESE FAT FOLKS ATE AS THOUGH THEIR LIFE DEPENDED UPON IT THEY'D STOP EATING!
Stop eating, people. Please. For your sake and the world you trample atop.
And this, by the way, is one of the premises for my new diet book. It's called, "The Save Your Life Diet."
Here's how it works…
1) You exercise. A lot. Naturally, a lot, when you've been doing none whatsoever, might be very little. All the same, you fatsos need to at least attempt to work up a sweat. Sweat, after all, is a good indicator of work, just as panting is. Start panting and drop a pant size! And forget all this BS about asking your physician before starting an exercise program! My guess is that he's also a fat-ass. And anyway, he's only going to tell you of the risks you may face while exercising. Of course, in order to exercise, you must "find the time". But this is the thing: the time is there, all right. And if it isn't, your time will run out that much sooner.
2) When you're hungry, you eat. But! There's a catch! You're only allowed to ingest real food. "Real food" is food that was recently ALIVE and was available only to our caveman brethren: vegetables, meats, eggs, fish, fruit, nuts, seeds and chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. I kid about that last one, of course. Don't be tempted, you weak-willed monstrous maggots.
3) When you're not hungry---get this---you DON'T eat. Hunger is a signal that you should probably eat. Appetite, on the other hand, is not. REQUIRING AND DESIRING CALORIES ARE TWO DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT THINGS, FATSO. Develop an understanding on the difference between the two and recognize when you require food, not when you desire it. By the way, you NEVER require chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
4) You are to drink lots of water, and only water. Frappuccinos, soda pops, another animal's milk, soy "milk", smoothies, shakes, teas, alcohol, juices and other liquids should not replace your daily water requirements. Your body is nearly 2/3rds water (and if you're American most of that is stored within the copious amounts of adipose enveloping you!) and you need to maintain this balance.
There it is…the entire book. Four straightforward points that may SAVE YOUR LIFE. And if it doesn't it's probably because you waited (weighted) too much.
PS: Not that this has anything to do with anything, but this morning I was given a parking ticket on my motorcycle here in little ol' Solvang. The police officer, a mustached man with a beer belly (surprise, surprise), told me I was not allowed to park where I had been attempting to.
"Sir, you will incur a citation," he affirmed.
"That's fine by me," I responded.
He didn't get it and I was ticketed $34, which, naturally, I don't plan to pay in this lifetime.

Beautiful post! You must have just seen my recent post: http://swimbikerunguy.blogspot.com/2009/05/i-like-smaller-green-butts.html. Keep it up. I love it.
The China Study is an interesting read about why we get sick from what we eat. It's a tough message to sell because diet is so emotive.
Nice Rant! Loved it. Too recently, I was one of those FAT people, and I've still got some pudge around the middle. But eating better and moving more has made a big difference. If only I wasn't quite so good at hearing the chocolate chip cookies calling me....
Found your blog a little while ago, and really like the straightforward approach you have.
EXCELLENT POST!!!! Honestly it's very scary to look at the current state of FATNESS in this country. I'm so sick of being ridiculed for being too skinny, or too boney, or whatever. The fact is, when I was playing football and lacrosse in college, weighing 250lbs I felt like sh*t! I'm MUCH more healthy and comfortable at 170!
As a personal trainer I deal with just what your talking about every single day! I'm so sick of seeing all these quick fix diets and fitness infomertials...What the F??? It's easy, move more, eat well, and you loose that gut!
On the other hand, maybe I'm glad people haven't figured it out-business is good! :)
Great post!
"more chins than a Chinese phone book!" CV, is Billy Crystal collaborating? Great stuff. My wife watches Oprah, which means I watch Oprah. Her Dr. boy (Dr. Oz?) was recently talking about how if a guy loses 30 lbs., he gains a little length in his johnson. You might want to add an addendum (lots a redundancy here) to your "book."
Cheers.
Excellent rant/blog! I really wish people in our country would begin to understand how wonderful food can be if you eat it...NOT the fake stuff that comes in a box or a bag.
Given that you are a tri coach, I can understand your advice to exercise a LOT, but one of my pet peeves is "over-fat" people who undertake triathlon or marathon training as a means to lose weight. 80% of weight loss is diet and I think huge amounts of cardio only reinforces the high carb/low fat diet that keeps people's insulin sensitivity in the toilet and maeks it harder for them to lose stored body fat.
I wish I could convince those people to clean up their diet, do a little bit of high intensity training 2-3 days a week and very easy lifestyle cardio the other days until they lose a bunch of weight and THEN move on to sport-specific, time consuming training.
Sorry so long...I love this stuff!
Excellent post.
Its one reason why I am against universal healthcare (I am also for it for other reasons)...but no matter how you structure it, ultimately 30% of us will be paying for the other 70% who have many, expensive problems due to their life choices.
Feeling a little angry today? Trust me, I hear you and it pisses me off to no end.
I often talk to people who want to "get in shape" and yet, according to them, already eat perfectly. Uh yeah, then why are you 30 pounds overweight?

Chuck,
I couldn't have said it better myself. Sorry none of the FAT folks will read this. They are surfing the food network or standing in line at the Olive Garden. It's all about the next meal.
I look forward to the blog post titled "I forgot to pay my parking tickets!" which will include this photo...

On Yeah! What he said!!! I think Oprah should call you and have you on her show to cut to the chase! Then again, her fan base does not want the truth... just more feel good lies to gnaw on. Literally. I get tired of having my one ingredient food spread lying around my office at work, only to have my peers smirk at me and shake their heads when I say "no thanks" every single day to the donut fest at the break table. Processed sugar, bleached flour, fried in overcooked hydrogenated oil? MMmmmmmmmm.... how can I walk away and eat macadamia nuts and raisins instead. That boy is a health food "nut." The only thing crazy or nutty I see happening... is that people ingest the poo clogging crap they have caked inside their mouth when they wisecrack about me being a nut. I tell them they are far more crazy than I am, eating that and all. What the hell has happened. Your rant was a breath of fresh air for me... being that I am surrounded by the smog strong processed food opinions most of the time.
Keep it up Chuckie. Your book deal, endorsed by Oprah, is bound to be only days away.
Kevin
Thumbs up! I find it also funny that the people who routinely harass me running/ riding are A)Rednecks B) Over-Weight C)White Trash but more often that not D) All of the above. It still blows my mind that the lack of respect people have for a skinny white kid training his ass off every day, and just people in general. No wander people don't take care of themselves, they treat a stranger like dirt.
you are so right
it's so scary
i can't believe people eat when they are not hungty
Chuckie,
All valid points, unfortunately you are preaching to the choir. Us fitness types (generally those of us that read your blog already are fit) are already following most of these points.
I need to work on eliminating things like the chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream still...
The last 7 day diet I went one, I only lost a week!
Maybe I should "drop my pants and start panting!"
Cheers,
From Canada
I am still giggling about the "FATSO" comments...Especially the bit about seeing a physician before you start a program. LMAO!!!!
This is like that Steve Martin SNL skit about his (one-page) book on financial success, the theme of which was "don't buy stuff you can't afford". Interestingly, there's an NPR interview about the chemistry and packaging of modern foods, and why people are eating more and more and more these days.

Hey, skinny, leave them pigs alone.
The thing I am amazed at is listening to my coworkers complaining about how they are fat but refusing to exercise or eat better. Unfortunately the people who read your blog aren't the people who need the advice. Aside from maybe the chocolate chip cookie dough...
Why is it SO important that Americans get and stay healthy now? Looks like America is about to insure the uninsured and the unhealthy (many would say this is noble). However, insurers and the President say they will trim 2 trillion dollars in medical expenses in the next ten years. Further, congress says we will cut Medicare re-imbursement to doctors by 21 percent. At current rates the number of docs is increasing by 1 percent a year and only 10 percent of that 1 percent is going into primary care. Nursing is stagnant. If we get 35 to 50 million new insured patients entering the system it will be incredibly bogged down. You are looking at rationing medical care. How many young students are going to want to enter and pay for medical school under these conditions? How many physicians will leave practice under these conditions? We are staring at a shortage of health care providers as well.
Kevin,
Excellent points all around, especially given that they come from a health care practitioner. Indeed, such is the high cost of health care. As P.J. O’Rourke said, "If you think health care is expensive now...wait until you see what it costs when it's free."
The politics of health care are obviously a noteworthy (as in major) concern. But regardless of national policy or an individual’s stance, the health of a nation is ultimately affected by the health (or lack thereof) of its populace. Of course, no one can be more responsible for our health than each one of us. This raises the question you essentially allude to: why should you and I pay for those who don’t take care of themselves?
In some ways it’s not an easy answer.
